Christian fiction, inspired by Judges 4 & 5. On his deathbed, Deborah’s grandfather prophesied she would be a Judge for Israel. But the elders of Ramah vowed a woman would never sit in the city gates to listen to cases. So Deborah and her husband, Barak, returned to his hometown of Kedesh, in the northern part of the Israel, where trouble brewed nearby King Jabin II had appointed Sisera to be commander of his army… and his nine-hundred iron chariots. Meanwhile, God brings disputes to Deborah for her to adjudicate, and soon she is holding court under the palm trees outside of Kedesh. Then God tells Deborah to hurry back to Ramah, and the family escapes just before Commander Sisera invades Israel and ransacks Kedesh. But Israel has no standing army to respond, and not a shield or a spear was seen among forty-thousand men. How will God use two such improbable people, a peasant woman and her husband, to lead Israel to victory against this formidable foe?

Powerful story based on Deborah from the Bible! I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It took the story of Deborah and Barak straight out of the Bible and made it into an even more dramatic and compelling story than it already is. The story is a good one, with Deborah becoming a judge in a day when women weren't given positions of authority. The parts of the story where she stood up and spoke for God and made decisions for the people were some of my favorite in the book. It's amazing the stories of the enemy and the battles and how God delivered the Israelites. Equally compelling were the stories of Deborah's family and friends in all their trials and the hope they had in God to deliver them. I highly recommend this book, Woman of Light. Thanks to the publisher and author for providing this complimentary copy in exchange for an honest review.
This is a story about a Biblical character from the Old Testament, Deborah. She was one of the judges of Israel, the only woman judge. The Bible doesn't say a lot about her, other than that she was a prophet, had a lot of wisdom, and she led Israel against their enemies, the Canaanites. If you read Judges, chapter 4, you'll get a more solid view of what the Bibles say about Deborah.

Teresa Pollard explains the theology behind her writings in an Author's Note at the front of the novel.

In this book, Lappidoth (Deborah's husband) is more of a title than a name. Lappidoth means torch or oil lamps, so the writer has placed Barak as her husband, and the two of them make and sell wicks for lamps that are brighter than usual. The priests buy their wicks exclusively because they're so bright.

He is known by Lappidoth when he is selling wicks to priests and others, and as Barak as he begins to be the leader of the Israelite army against the overwhelming forces of Jabin, king of Canaan. Sisera is the Canaanite general.

I enjoy reading Biblical fiction--it gives me more perspectives than I might have otherwise had, and it often helps me understand some of the difficult passages. If you're of the same mind, you just might want to grab this book.
Teresa Pollard is a talented storyteller. She has the ability to color within the outlines provided by scripture; adding flesh, bone, drama, pathos and humor to it. Woman of Light is a rich read, filled with heart. It answers the question of how it became possible for Deborah to judge, when women were not viewed as capable. What a wonderful palm tree ministry she had.

This book gives color and light to the story found in Judges 4 and 5. Yes, it is a work of fiction, yet scripture is skillfully woven into the narrative. It offers a vivid picture of how the judges of that day operated. She gives excellent characterization to the types of grievances and matters that they dealt with, and how they relied upon the wisdom of Torah (The Law) to settle matters. Over time we get to see the prophetess Deborah become established within the authority of her mantle. We see probabilities of the everyday life that led Deborah and Barak to become two true champions of Israel. There is even an early introduction and backstory for Jael, the woman that would ultimately end the reign of Sisera.

If you are of the King James ilk, you might deem some of the dialogue to be a little too modern. Nevertheless, it is a marvelous read. I finished it in one day.

I enjoyed this book! Ms. Pollard, kudos to you for this well told story.

This book was read more out of curiosity than anything else. It turned out to be a lot more accurate than I expected and provided the writer and opportunity to take some liberties in creating an interesting story . I mentioned the book was read initially out of curiosity simply because my name is Deborah and I've always referred to my name is being spelled the biblical way , the correct way
This was not according to scripture...
Love the story telling and authenticity of this book.
A well written but short/concise telling of the story about ..the only woman judge chosen by God. This novel accurately parallels the biblical story. I enjoyed reading this novel
